Random Saturday Ep 50: Rare Pets

Hey all, Jade here with this week’s Random Saturday (and the 50th overall)! Today, I’ll be talking about one of my favorite things in Animal Jam: pets! More specifically, rare pets.

There are a lot of pets in Animal Jam, ranging from hamsters to phantoms to hippos. However, certain pets are classified as rare, most of them because they have a rare tag. These pets can be worth anywhere from a few den betas to over 50 black longs, all depending on what kind they are and what features they have.

There's a lot of pictures in this post, so I'm putting the rest of it under a cut! Click read more if you'd like to continue!

There are two classifications of rare pets- big and small. Small rare pets have a minimum worth of den betas, and big rare pets have a minimum worth of one black long.

My rare pet collection, including the majority of the pets classified as "small"

A nonmember Phantom

Pets with effects (can be obtained from playing the pet mini-games a lot)

The small rare pets include the rare member Phantom, Meagyn's Pet Bear, pets with effects, nonmember Phantom, Golden Bunny, Squirrel, Mouse, Firefly, Grasshopper, Ladybug, and Mantis.

Most of these pets are worth a decent short collar at minimum, but the pets with effects and Meagyn’s Pet Bear are typically worth den betas, the member Phantoms are worth at least a good short collar, and the nonmember Phantoms are worth at least a good long collar.

The ten "big" rare pets

The big rare pets include the magenta Seal, Hedgehog, Seal, Groundhog, Sloth, Otter, Dove, Golden Pony, Golden Armadillo, and nonmember Fennec Fox.

These pets are worth much more than the small rare pets, starting at a few black long collars. The Golden Armadillo and nonmember Fennec Fox are the rarest of the big pets, seeing as there are only two of each confirmed in the game.

A mouse with "pacman" eyes

A "mustard" squirrel

A "mohawk" mouse

There are certain features that are very desired in these pets that can increase their worth, mostly centered around color and eye shape. The rarest colors vary between pets, but one of the best overall is “mustard” yellow. The rarest eye shape tends to be “pacman” eyes. On squirrels specifically, people tend to want short tails and star eyes. Mohawks are also very sought-after for certain pets. The least-rare features tends to be the eyes with eyelashes, or "girl eyes".

Overall, the worth of these pets is pretty hard to determine, especially for the big rare pets. It fluctuates a lot and it’s very different from pet to pet, so the best way to determine worth is often to ask pet collectors and traders in the community who have experience estimating worth. Personally, I’m pretty good at estimating small pet worth, but very bad at big pet worth.

At the moment, I’m trying to collect at least one of every kind of pet! The picture of small rare pets up above is my collection, as well as the pacman mouse. It’s going to take a while to collect all of them, since some of them are worth so much, but I’m making progress! If any of you also want to collect pets or just need help on worth, a good place to look is the AJ Item Worth wiki’s Pets page.

Well, that’s all for today! What’s your favorite pet on Animal Jam? Do you have a pet collection, or do you want to start one? Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments. Stay safe and Jam On!
