Rare Item Guide

There are a lot of items in Animal Jam that have special "glitched" or "beta" counterparts that are worth much more than other variants. Many of these items are very similar in appearance to their less valuable counterparts, and scammers will often use cheaper, nearly identical items to trick unsuspecting players into thinking they are worth a lot. This page should help you identify the differences between valuable item variants and the fakes that scammers will use to trick people.
Note: This page is specifically for identifying "glitched" or "beta" variants of certain items. If you are looking for a comprehensive guide of values for other rare items, we suggest you check out the AJ Item Worth Wiki, which tracks the demand and perceived value of most rare items. You can also click on the title of each section to go to the Item Worth Wiki page for that item.

If it's hard to see any of the comparison images, you can click to enlarge them.

Cupid Wings were first released in February 2014 as balloon-like wings with pure white shine. On their second release in February 2015, they had slightly different designs; their base colors were the same, but the shine was now a lighter version of the base color rather than pure white (with the exception of the white variant, which did not change). The original 2014 run of the Cupid Wings, referred to as "glossies", are now very valuable. While the 2015 Cupid Wings are still somewhat valuable, they are not worth near as much as their "glossy" counterparts. The white sheen of the real "glossy" wings should pop out in comparison to the base color.

The exception to this rule is the black Cupid Wings. On their first release, their shine was not pure white, but a very light grey. On their 2015 rerelease, their shine was changed to a darker grey instead. These ones may be harder to identify, so when in doubt, don't hesitate to screenshot it into an editing program and pick the color of the shine with the eyedropper tool to compare it.

The Rare Cupid Wings do not have a "glossy" variant, since they were only released for one day as a Rare Item Monday. There is also no such thing as white "glossy" Cupid Wings since the white variant did not change upon its 2015 rerelease.

The Arctic Hood has a very valuable beta variant that was only available during the beta testing period. The real beta Arctic Hood has a dark turquoise base with a green eyepiece. There are two fake variants of this item, one of which has a similar dark turquoise base but a black eyepiece, and one of which has a similar green eyepiece but a light/pale blue base.

The Old Blanket has a very valuable "beta" variant that was only available for a short window of time after beta testing ended, after which it was replaced by a different color. The real beta Blanket has a pale green base with bright green patches, while the fake variant that can be purchased at the Shiveer Shoppe has a distinct dark green base with bright green patches.

The Tiara has three variants that were available during the beta testing period, but are no longer available. The most notable of these is the beta Tiara, a green tiara with a blue/purple gem on its top. The fake variant of the beta Tiara is the storebought version that has a red gem instead of a blue/purple gem. The difference should be fairly easy to spot.

There is a variant of the Homemade Wings that left stores sometime in 2013. It appears very similar to the brown and green Homemade Wings that are still available in stores. The real "beta" Homemade Wings have a more yellow-green color to them, while the fakes have a brighter green.
The difference may be a little hard to identify by sight alone, but you can also identify it by putting a screenshot of the item into an editing program and color-picking the wings with the eyedropper tool.

The Epic Plushies are a series of 8 items that could be obtained by redeeming the codes that came with purchase of a Sidekix plushie from AJ Outfitters from 2012 until sometime in 2013. The Epic Plushies are highly sought after due to the fact they required the purchase of a physical item and have been discontinued for several years.
A June 2021 update introduced the Epic Plushie Scavenger Hunt, during which smaller versions of the 8 Epic Plushie variants were hidden around Jamaa. When a player located a plushie, they could click on it to purchase an item version of the plushie for 1,000 Gems. However, these items are different from the original Epic Plushies.

The scavenger hunt Epic Plushies are identical to the Epic Plushies obtained from the Sidekix codes both in name and appearance. The only differentiating feature is that the original Sidekix plushies now sport a rare tag when viewed in an inventory or in a My Shop, while the 2021 versions do not. Scammers may use the 2021 versions to scam by claiming that they are worth the same as the rare ones.

When Turquoise Rings were first released, only two variants were available. After an update, these variants were replaced by the eight variants that are currently purchasable from Epic Wonders. The initial two variants are now quite valuable. The "first" ring has a very distinct appearance, with a light blue base and a mint green gemstone with an eyeball-like design on it.

The "second" glitched ring is not worth as much as the "first" glitched ring but is still valued quite high. It is also very similar in appearance to the default variant of the Turquoise Ring that is currently available for sale, which means scammers may try and trick you into thinking that the storebought ring is actually the "second" glitched ring. The main difference is that the "glitched" ring's marking on its base are a dark purple while the fake's markings are lighter than its base purple color.

There is also a "third" glitched ring that was discovered in 2018. It is similar in appearance to the "first" ring, but the markings on its base are blue instead of green and the mint green gemstone is noticeably paler. The origins of this ring are not entirely clear, but in January 2019, AJHQ gave out a few of these rings on a livestream. They do not have a stable estimated value currently, since little information is known about them.

There are a variety of "glitched" items in Animal Jam that have a distinct magenta coloration. This coloration is the result of the item model's colors not being input correctly. Since these are items were released by mistake, they are scarce and highly sought after. There are a lot of different ways scammers may try and scam with magenta items.

Magenta Lasso, Magenta Knight Armor, Magenta Mysterious Cloak, and Magenta Frying Pan Hat
The Lasso, Knight Armor, Mysterious Cloak, and Frying Pan Hat are all items sold in stores that have variants that appear very similar to the valuable glitched magenta items. In reality, these items can be purchased from their respective shops and simply appear this way by design. Scammers may try and trick you by claiming these items are "glitched" and therefore very valuable, but they are not worth much of anything.

If you are ever in doubt about whether an item is really glitched to be magenta or if that is just what it is intended to look like, we suggest checking that item's page on the Animal Jam Wiki to see a full list of all its variants.

Magenta Hockey Mask
The Hockey Mask has a variant with a mostly magenta coloration, but which can be obtained through adventures and is therefore not super valuable. However, it also has a real "glitched" magenta variant that is worth much, much more. The real magenta Hockey Mask is fully magenta, while the "fake" Hockey Mask has a lighter, cooler magenta color and purple-grey eyes and markings. There is only one glitched magenta Hockey Mask known to exist, so you should be very wary if you see somebody claiming to be trading this item.

Magenta Necklace
There is a variant of the classic Necklace that is fully magenta rather than only being magenta on the band of the necklace. It can be differentiated from the Necklace sold in stores by the fact that it is fully magenta, while the fake magenta Necklace has a silver bezel and a red gemstone. Like the magenta Hockey Mask, only one of this item is known to exist in-game, so you should be cautious if you see someone claiming to be trading this item.

Magenta Spiked Collar/Wristband
There are two different versions of the magenta Spiked Collar and magenta Spiked Wristband: the real "glitched" versions, which is simply a fully magenta variant of the existing Rare Spiked Collar/Wristband items, and the fake Diamond Shop versions, which were intentionally created by AJHQ and released in February 2017. The real versions are worth much more than the fake versions, so be sure to identify which one you are dealing with before you make a trade. These items appear identical when equipped on a player's animal, and the only visual difference is their names and the symbols on their inventory icons: the real glitched version has a rare tag and is called "Rare Spiked Collar/Wristband", while the fake has a Diamond Shop symbol and is called "Magenta Spiked Collar/Wristband".

Magenta Furry Hat
There are two versions of the magenta Furry Hat. The original glitched magenta version was sold for only a few hours in January 2014 before being replaced by the white variant of the Furry Hat that was intended to be sold. The "fake" magenta Furry Hat was given out as a prize during several livestreams that AJHQ hosted during 2019. Both variants are valuable, but the real magenta Furry Hat is worth a bit more.
The only visual difference between the two items is that the real magenta Furry Hat has a duller eggshell-like color on its snowflake emblem, while the fake has a pure white snowflake emblem. The difference is very small and it's recommended you put pictures of the item into an editing program to see what color it is before trading for it, as this one may be difficult to identify by sight alone.

Magenta Festive Lights
In 2015, there were two magenta variants of the Festive Lights available when they were given out as gifts for the Jamaaliday Calendar and sold in stores. Both versions are somewhat valuable, but the version with green/red/magenta lights is worth more than the variant with just red and magenta lights.

There are two variants of the Rare Nerd Glasses - one that was sold in stores for one day as a Rare Item Monday, and one that can be won as a prize in adventures. While the adventure variant still has some value, it is not worth near as much as the RIM version. The RIM version has grey tape on the bridge of the glasses and a grey pencil tip, while the less valuable adventure version has golden-yellow tape and a golden-yellow pencil tip.

The other two variants of the Tiara that are no longer available in-game are the "pearly" Tiara and the "milky" Tiara. There are very few known to exist in-game, and the people who own them are probably not interested in trading them, so you should be cautious if you see people claiming to be trading or giving away these items. The "milky" tiara has a very pale pink base with a pink gem, and the "pearly" tiara has a pale base with a purple gem. The fake storebought tiara that is often passed off as one of these two variants looks similar to the "pearly" tiara, but has a bright blue gem instead of a purple one.

"Golden" Pet Piglet
Dressing a Pet Piglet with the golden top hat accessory at the Pet Stop in the Play-As-Your-Pet Party and Pets Only Party will also turn the rest of the Piglet golden. These Pet Piglets are not valuable like other golden pets. Scammers may price these Pet Piglets highly in their shops or ask for rare items in exchange for them in an attempt to trick people into thinking they are worth more than they are.

There are three different kinds of pet phantoms - rare non-member Pet Phantoms, rare Diamond Shop Pet Phantoms, and non-rare Diamond Shop Pet Phantoms. All three versions are obtained and valued differently. Be sure to properly identify which one you are trading for before you go through with it!
The rare non-member Pet Phantoms are obtained by redeeming a code from a Jazwares toy set. Their most distinctive feature is the lack of a members-only lock when appearing in a player's inventory or trade list. They also appear with a rare tag when viewed in a player's inventory or trade list. Their species is listed as "Pet Phantom" on their pet certificate.

The rare Diamond Shop Pet Phantoms were only sold for several days in October 2016. They are members-only and can be identified by the Diamond icon and the rare tag on their inventory preview. Their species is also listed as "Rare Pet Phantom" on their pet certificate.

The non-rare Diamond Shop Pet Phantoms are sold annually in the Diamond Shop during October. They are members-only and have no rare tag, but they do have a Diamond icon. They are not worth as much as other Pet Phantoms because they are released into shops every year. Their species is listed as "Pet Phantom" on their pet certificate.

The Pet Golden Bunny is a promo pet that can be obtained by redeeming a code from a Jazwares toy set, and it is very valuable. Scammers may create a Pet Bunny that looks similar to a Pet Golden Bunny to try and trick you into thinking it is more valuable than it is. The key identifiers are that the Pet Golden Bunny is sparkling gold rather than plain yellow, and all of its features (eyes, nose, accessories, etc.) are golden as well. Pet Golden Bunnies will also have a rare tag on their inventory preview. The fake golden bunny will have plain looking features and a flat yellow color. You can also check the pet certificate to see if its species is listed as "Pet Golden Bunny" or simply "Pet Bunny".

The Wood Surfboard was formerly sold at Jam Mart Furniture before leaving stores. It is not obtainable through any means other than trading, making it quite valuable. There is also a similar item, simply called "Surfboard", sold in Sunken Treasures, the underwater den item shop. These items appear very similar to each other, even having one near-identical design variant (red with blue bubbles), but the Wood Surfboard is worth way more than the Surfboard. Ever since an update made it so land and ocean den items can be placed in both land and ocean dens, the underwater symbol was removed from all underwater den items, making them appear even more similar than before.
The main visual difference besides their names is that the fake Surfboard has a large bite mark out of the corner. Scammers may try and trick you into thinking the Surfboard is worth the same as the Wood Surfboard, but they are completely different items.

The Rare Wreath Necklace was available as a prize in Jamaaliday Rescue in 2015, but it has not been available since. It is now very valuable. Scammers may try and trick you into thinking the non-rare Wreath Necklaces are worth as much as the Rare Wreath Necklace.

Upon the Ornament Earrings' first few weeks of release, they were glitched so that only the default color was available for purchase. After an update, the bug was fixed, but the default version was replaced by a slightly different variant. The original Ornament Earring default variant is now very valuable. The real glitched Ornament Earrings has a blueish-green color on the left earring, while the fake has a brighter dark green color.

During the Jamaaliday Branch Antler's first few weeks of release, they were glitched so that only the default variant could be purchased. After an update, this bug was fixed, but the default variant was replaced with a slightly different version. The original glitched variant is now quite valuable. The real glitched Jamaaliday Branch Antlers have a brown base with lighter brown veins, while the fake has a brown base with pinkish-brown veins. The difference might be difficult to spot, since the veins are so small, so you can always pick the colors with the eyedropper tool in an editing program to make sure you aren't getting scammed.

Important: These screenshots were taken before this item was relocated to the Diamond Shop. Both the real and fake versions of this item WILL have a Diamond Shop symbol when viewed on a player's trade list. Do not use the presence of a Diamond Shop symbol to determine whether this item is real or fake.

During the Yeti Face's first few weeks of release, it was glitched so that only the default variant was available for purchase. After an update, the bug was fixed, but the default version was also replaced by a slightly different variant. Since it has been a long time since the Yeti Face has been in stores, all variants are valuable, but the updated default version is still not worth as much as the glitched version it bears resemblance to. The glitched version has pale blue fur, while the new default version (the "fake") has a more vibrant blue.

    2. Yes, it probably will be proven helpful in the future (I'm a Chromebook player right now so I can't use much of it). I can't even tell the difference between both homemade wings lol
